Circular Path to Self

Happy 2024!

As we start a new year, I’ve been reflecting on the idea of growth and new beginnings. Each new year comes with a shared sense of enthusiasm for growth, resolution, and ambition. I’ve noticed that this desire for newness speaks to the pursuit of a seemingly perfected version of ourselves. As I reflected on this idea, I found value in themes that are often associated with mandalas. In the language of Sanskrit, “mandala” means “circle.” In its simplest form, it's a geometric configuration of symbols and design. Mandalas have been used across cultures and within various traditions for thousands of years to embody unity and the connection between the self and the cosmos. Mandalas represent a sense of wholeness.

What if, instead of viewing our growth as a linear progression, we embraced the concept of life as a mandala? A circular adventure, designed to foster alignment within ourselves and bring us back to our center. Carl Jung, a well-known psychologist who founded Analytical Psychology, used mandalas in his therapeutic practice as powerful tools for self-reflection. He saw mandalas as windows into the soul—a guide to the center of ourselves and a visual expression of our inner world. For Jung, the mandala represents unity, integration, and self-discovery.

Oftentimes, creating artwork can ease the expression of emotions and experiences in ways that writing or talking might not. So, how can your Life Mandala become a therapeutic tool for self-reflection? Let’s create one together! Consider it a personal canvas—a space where you can weave together your aspirations, experiences, and intentions for the upcoming year.

Step-by-Step Guide: Crafting Your Life Mandala

  1. Preparation:

Gather your supplies – paper, markers, and any other art materials that spark your creativity. Find a space that encourages your self-reflection and promotes introspection.

  1. Create your Canvas:

Start by drawing or painting a large circle. This circle will serve as the canvas for your Life Mandala. Reflect on the structure of your Mandala. For example, you might create various shapes, you can divide the circle into sections, or leave it blank to freely choose as you go. This is your life Mandala! Let it reflect you. Consider how you will incorporate all the aspects of your life, such as health, relationships, career, personal development, hobbies, well-being, and more.

  1. Selecting Symbols:

Incorporate symbols or words within your Mandala. For instance, if one portion represents health, you might include symbols related to fitness, balanced nutrition, and well-being. Think about the key themes and intentions that resonate with your aspirations for the year ahead. You may have a heart for relationships, a book for personal development, a mountain for challenges, etc. Get creative!

  1. Color and Design:

Represent your life within each category using color and design. For example, you may infuse your Mandala with colors that evoke the emotions associated with each experience, challenge, triumph, or intention. Consider the significance of each placement and how it contributes to the overall harmony of your Life Mandala.

  1. Recognize the Past and Future:

Reflect on the highs and lows that have shaped the past year. As you welcome 2024, contemplate the aspirations and goals you hope to welcome into your life. Incorporate these into your Mandala! Consider the idea that life’s journey, much like your Mandala, has no distinct beginning or end but is a continual process of growth. Notice the interconnected design of the Mandala- each experience, challenge, and triumph is woven together to display a holistic expression of you.

  1. Reflect on Your Mandala:

How did it feel to create this? What patterns do you notice? Are there areas that feel more vibrant or areas that may need more attention? Use this reflection to refine your goals or intentions for the year.

Creating a Life Mandala is not limited to this time of year or a new beginning. You can engage in this whenever you find it helpful.
