The Rise of AI In Therapy

The Rise of AI in Mental Health: Where It Helps and Where Human Connection Still Matters

Why Are More People Using AI for Mental Health Support?

More and more people are turning to AI tools for support with their mental health. They’re asking questions, seeking advice, processing situations, and trying to make sense of their emotions. From my perspective, that shift makes so much sense. These tools are low-cost, available at any time, and often feel less intimidating than reaching out to another person. For many people, they can be a helpful place to begin.

What Are the Benefits of Using AI for Mental Health?

I’ve noticed so many benefits to using AI in a therapeutic way, and it would be simply untrue to pretend otherwise. It can be incredibly useful when you need practical tools or guidance for a difficult situation. If you’re preparing for a challenging conversation, trying to understand patterns in your relationships, or looking for strategies to manage anxiety or conflict, AI can offer structure, language, and perspective in a way that feels immediate and supportive. It can help you organize your thoughts and begin to make sense of what you’re going through.

Can AI Be Helpful During Difficult Emotional Moments?

I also want to be transparent that I use tools like this myself, when I’m unable to lean on my usual support system, and I have seen how helpful they can be for my clients during especially tough moments. Whether you’re spiraling late at night, in the middle of a conflict, or trying to put words to something you’re feeling, having access to support in those moments can make such a difference.

What Are the Limitations of AI in Mental Health?

At the same time, there is an important limitation to understand, and it has less to do with knowing what to do and more to do with how change actually happens.

Why Doesn’t Insight Alone Create Change?

You can understand your patterns intellectually and still find yourself repeating them. Real change happens when we feel our emotions, stay with them, and have a new experience while we are in them. One of the most powerful elements of therapy is the opportunity to be vulnerable with another human being, to say something out loud that feels risky and then experience what it’s like to be seen and accepted. That kind of experience, while it can be deeply uncomfortable, is often where growth begins.

How Is AI Different From Human Connection in Therapy?

AI offers a very different kind of interaction. It is private, predictable, and emotionally neutral. That can feel safe, especially if vulnerability has felt uncomfortable in the past. But that same safety does not gently challenge us to grow in real time.

Can AI Keep Us Stuck in Overthinking?

I’ve also noticed that it tends to keep us in our heads. For people who already overthink or analyze their emotions, relying heavily on cognitive tools can unintentionally reinforce the very pattern that keeps them stuck. We may get better at explaining our feelings without actually feeling them.

Can AI Replace Therapy?

This doesn’t mean AI has no place in mental health support. In fact, it can be a powerful complement to therapy. It can help you prepare for sessions, reflect afterward, or practice new skills between appointments. However, it cannot replace what happens when you sit with another person and allow yourself to be seen. We learn vulnerability by practicing it with another person, and we grow not just through insight, but through connection.

When Should You Consider Therapy Instead of AI?

Using AI for support often reflects a genuine desire to understand yourself and take care of your emotional well-being. And if you find that you are gaining insight but still feeling stuck or disconnected from your emotions, that may be a sign that insight alone is not enough. You may be ready for a therapeutic relationship that allows you to experience your emotions safely and fully.
